Not Sleeping Can Make You Fatter

Insufficient sleep can set you up to make bad decisions that can affect your weight. It lowers your frontal lobe’s ability to help you control impulses, make good decisions and act on those decisions.

When you’re tired, your brain starts seeking activities that feel good. They are often impulsive decisions like eating sweets or sucking down an energizing latte.

Because your frontal lobe is impaired, your ability to say no to that latte may be impaired, too.

A lack of sleep will also elevate your cortisol levels. The spike signals to your body that it needs to conserve energy instead of burning fat.

And So Can Stress

A large percentage of insomnia cases are stress-related. Simply put, stress can destroy a healthy sleep pattern.

Stress in itself elevates cortisol levels. When stress leads to sleep deprivation, the sleep deprivation also elevates cortisol. That’s a double whammy that can make you fatter.

None of us get enough protein in our diets, especially women. 

How Much Protein Do You Need to Survive?

In order to merely survive and keep your body’s insides functioning, you need approximately 0.37 grams of protein per pound of body weight. For the metric system people, that’s 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. 

This means a woman weighing 150 pounds, or 68kg, needs approximately 55g of protein.  

Consider that the bare minimum. If you want to think clearly, move around, or build up immunity, you need more. 

How Much Protein Do You Need to Function & Thrive?

For that, the woman above needs about 85g of protein per day. That’s only a rough estimate. I’m just trying to emphasize the importance of getting enough high-quality protein in your diet. 

In fact, this is nowhere near exact. Everyone has a unique rate of metabolism. Any underlying health condition is also going to alter these numbers.

For example, I am a 57-year-old woman of average weight who goes to the gym three times a week (but not at the moment), exercises on non-gym days and gardens with fervor. I also do my best to consume approximately 90g of protein per day.  

Protein IS the building block of all the body’s cells, including the ones that power your immune system. The protein you consume breaks down into amino acids. These amino acids become many specialized building blocks for specialized cells. 

OMG, you say. That is a heck of a lot of food… Not really. 

List of Protein-Rich Foods 

Here are some examples of protein-rich foods and how much protein they give you:

Yeah, I know. I kind of mixed my methods of measuring, but you get my point. 

How to Choose & Use a Protein Powder

Protein powders come in really handy. I have some days when I just don’t want to eat much, but…

Instead of sacrificing my nutrient profile for the day, I mix up a smoothie with protein powder or just take the protein powder without a smoothie.   

My personal protein of choice is whey. I switched from plant-based stuff as I found I was having trouble digesting the pea, rice and hemp proteins. 

I was paranoid at first, thinking I couldn’t do the whey because I stay away from dairy most of the time. I guess you could say that I “limit” dairy because it usually contributes to inflammation.  

Seek out a powder that is made from “whey isolate.” This means that most of the carbs and fats have been removed, leaving primarily protein content. Even most lactose intolerant people find that they can tolerate whey protein. 

I do, and I notice a big difference in my mood, as protein is also a building block for feel-good hormones that help to stave off depression. Can you say “social distancing?” 

Dairy Products & Chronic Inflammation

Now back to the inflammation from dairy products that I mentioned above.  

Normal inflammation is a good thing. In fact, it is the body’s natural response to stimuli. 

Oh the memories of putting a candle out with my fingers! The red, warm and puffy reaction.  This is good inflammation. 

These response symptoms are signs that my body sprang into action to heal my fingers.

Some inflammatory responses are inappropriate or last too long. This gives rise to nasty conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune disorders, depression, and the list goes on. 

This, my friends, is why my personal choice is to avoid all pro-inflammatory food. 

A Superb Way to Conquer Inflammation

Luckily we all have access to a really good turmeric/curcumin supplement from Nambu Botanicals. It’s called Shreem Brzee.

Like I said in another recent nutrition rant, ingesting turmeric spice by itself is helpful. However, it just does not give the same degree of health benefits as standardized curcumin. In uncertain times, it’s especially important to remain grounded and centered. When we’re dealing with a constant fight or flight stress response, our immune systems suffer. So do our decision-making skills, relationships, and other matters in life. 

Consistently deep breathing helps us with all these things and helps prevent illnesses. It is one of the most important things you can do for your immune system. It doesn’t take much of your time. In fact, you can overlap deep breathing with other activities, like dishwashing.   

Benefits of deep breathing for the immune system:

  • Balances the immune system so that it doesn’t overreact & cause harm
  • Stimulates production of natural killer (NK) cells
  • Lowers cortisol, the stress hormone
  • Improves sleep, which is important for proper immune function
  • Helps reduce chronic inflammation, the root of most illnesses
  • Fuels your blood with oxygen, which goes into your cells & organs
  • Enhances your ability to listen to your body’s needs 

How to Breathe Diaphragmatically for Immune System Support 

Do this exercise as often as you can remember to. This will form a habit that you will thank yourself for in the long run. 

  1. Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose.
  2. During the inhale, imagine your belly as a balloon that inflates in all directions. You should feel it gently pushing your spine, your groin, and your ribs as it inflates.
  3. Exhale slowly and deeply through your nose and let your “balloon” deflate. 

For even deeper breathing, you can add another step after #2: After your balloon fills up, allow your chest to expand like a balloon. While exhaling, deflate your chest first and then your belly. 

If controlled breathing is a new habit you’re trying to establish, you may need to get used to the extra oxygen. You will get used to it quickly.

Put down the brownie! 

Seriously…they are so, so yummy. However, the sugar and the processed junk in them - including the flour and processed sugar in your homemade brownies - will weaken your immune system.  

Store-bought brownies are even worse! Yuck! 

I know that comfort foods are usually junk foods, and who doesn’t crave some comfort right now? 


You NEED a strong immune system. 

This is always the case, but it’s more important now than ever before. 

Sugar Puts Your Immune System Cells in Time Out 

Sweets like brownies spike your blood sugar level. This creates an environment that viruses and other harmful microbes absolutely love. They thrive in these conditions. 

They also decrease the immune response.  

The immune system cells attack viruses and bacteria. That’s their game. They hate increased sugar levels. When you down a couple of sugary drinks, or a brownie, they get benched for at least a few hours. 

The Killer Combo: Malnourishment & Obesity 

If you keep filling your belly with more sugar and processed junk, you will become malnourished. Malnourishment isn’t just for the starving and underweight (God Bless Them). Many overweight people are deficient in essential nutrients too. 

In fact, in a world full of processed foods and refined sugars, obesity and malnutrition go hand-in-hand. 

Your Food Can Be Poison or Medicine for Your Immune System 

Nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin C and zinc are crucial for a strong and healthy immune system. You can get all of them through supplements or food. 

In my humble opinion as a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, it is more effective to use food as your medicine and get the required nutrients from your food.  

Foods Rich in Vitamin A 

Good food sources of vitamin A are animal proteins, liver, eggs and fish. If meats aren’t your thing, you can get plenty of vitamin A in orange sweet potatoes, squash, carrots, spinach, kale, dried apricots, melon, spring greens, and more. Google it! 

Foods Rich in Vitamin C 

Vitamin C is an essential fuel for your immune system. Humans actually used to manufacture megadoses of it in their bodies, especially if their health was under attack. Most plants and animals still do this. Exceptions include bats, guinea pigs, and domestic dogs and cats. Some researchers speculate that this could be the reason so many wild animals don’t suffer from many diseases like people do.  

Foods that give you vitamin C are: 

  • Citrus fruit
  • Broccoli
  • Kale
  • Cauliflower
  • Bell pepper (green or yellow)
  • Cantaloupe
  • Strawberry
  • Kiwi
  • Most plant-based foods 

You need about 8-10 servings of vitamin C per day. This loosely translates to 4-5 PACKED cups of fruits and vegetables. 

Foods Rich in Zinc 

Zinc is most plentiful in oysters. Personally, yuck (again). 

Oysters are not in every grocery store, especially now. 

Luckily, zinc is also available in meats, shellfish, nuts, seeds, eggs and… 

drum roll please…

Dark chocolate. 

I don’t mean candy bars. Those aren’t even real chocolate. I mean bitter, real, dark chocolate with no added flavors or added sugars. If you get your hands on real chocolate, limit yourself to one section per day.  

Dark chocolate also has magnesium in it. Magnesium is good for the nervous system, and it helps keep you regular if you know what I mean. 

Cooking Spices for Your Immune System 

The weird times we’re in provide a great opportunity to cook at home and eat well. Don’t forget to add herbs and spices to make things interesting.  

Some good spices to fight viruses and help your immune system are: 

  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Rosemary
  • Chili pepper
  • Oregano 

Flavoring your food with antiviral spices is a win-win! 

Don’t Forget the Turmeric 

Turmeric contains antioxidants called curcuminoids. The most well-known curcuminoid is called curcumin. They neutralize free radicals that cause aging and that make you more vulnerable to illnesses. Curcuminoids help your immune system in other ways, too. 

When I said it’s best to get your nutrients from food sources, I was overgeneralizing. 

The turmeric on your spice rack contains curcuminoids, but you never know how much you’re going to get from it. It’s just not standardized for these antioxidants. 

If you want to be sure of how much of these compounds you’re getting, then you need a supplement that is standardized for curcumin and the other curcuminoids.

The Vedic and Tamil lunar astrological calendars divide each lunar month into 30 parts, called tithis. There are 15 tithis from the New Moon to the Full Moon and vice versa.
The 11th Moon, which is just a few days before the New Moon or Full Moon, is a wealth 
powertime called Ekadasi. Today is an 11th Moon day.
11th Moons are ruled by Vishnu, who is the archetype of wealth and of the preservation of ancient wisdom. It is said this is the day when the Moon heightens our ability to concentrate, which is why people fast on 11th Moons while connecting with Vishnu through meditation.

Herbs Have Powertimes, Too
The Siddhas of Tamil Nadu have always emphasized the Gods and Goddesses behind particular herbs. These Deities give the herbs their powertimes.
It is said that Vishnu resides in Tulsi (Holy Basil). So does Radha, who is Krishna’s lover.
