Chakra 101: A Beginner's Guide To Your Energy System

Are you familiar with chakras and what they do? If you're a yogi or practice mediation, you may be familiar with the term. Your body has seven main chakras which start at the base of spine and continue along the spine to the crown of the head. Think of chakras as energy centers in your body. Read a brief guide below to understand how the chakras of your root, sacral and naval work to help you achieve optimal wellness:

Location: Base of the spine.

Regulates: Security, survival

Blockages cause anxiety, instability and hopelessness

The root chakra is the first chakra located at the bottom of the spine and connects us to the earth. The root chakra is the most commonly blocked chakra. To balance this chakra regularly engage in activities such as going on walks and guided meditations. Not sure how to meditate? Check out our guide on meditation here to get started.

Affirmation: “I courageously ban fear from my mind when it tries to distract me.”

Location: Lower abdomen.
Regulates: Bodily pleasure and desires

Blockages cause depression, alcoholism and impotence

The sacral chakra deals with bodily pleasure or desires, and is blocked by guilt. This comes when you feel like people are taking advantage of you. It's a matter of setting boundaries with those you love and work with. You can’t change others but you can change yourself.

Affirmation: “I am at my best when I’m standing for my own needs.”

Location: Stomach
Regulates: Empowerment, energy and increased will power

Blockages causes shame or feeling that you can’t do something.

The naval chakra is responsible for our core center, housing the energy of our most vital organs. Never say to yourself: “I’m never going to be able to do <insert here>, I can’t.”

When this comes up, think: “Get out of here. I can do anything I set my mind to!”

Affirmation: I embrace life with passion. My senses are alive, aware and connected.
