Happy New Year! It is officially 2016 and today is the first blank page of your 365-page book. We want to help you write a good one and show you that anything is possible this year!

Whether you want to call them New Year’s Resolutions or not- setting S.M.A.R.T goals for yourself on a regular basis is the best way to create positive change in your life. Simply identifying your goals isn’t quite
enough though. Science has proven that writing down your goals increases the likelihood that you will achieve them by as much as 80%! Once you’ve identified the goals, you must then create an action plan and follow through with taking the daily steps required to achieve your goals. The hardest part of achieving your goals is staying committed to the lifestyle changes you must make to see them through.

Follow the easy 3-step process below to identify your goals and set daily intentions to make them happen this year!

STEP 1:
Begin the goal-setting process by identifying 1-3 goals you’d like to achieve in 2016. Your goals should follow the S.M.A.R.T formula:

Specific- Your goal should be as specific as possible. Ex: “I want to meditate for 30-minutes, 5 days a week.”

Measurable- You should be able to measure the progress you’re making towards your goal. Ask yourself, “How will I know once I’ve accomplished this goal.” In the example above, you will know you are making progress if you’ve been meditating for 30-minutes, 3 days per week. You will know that you’ve achieved the goal when you consistently meditate for 30-minutes, 5 days a week!
Attainable- You should already have or be able to develop the knowledge, skills, abilities and attitude to attain your goal.

Realistic- Your goal should be something that you are both willing and able to work towards. Setting goals that are unrealistic will only lead you to experience disappointment and failure.

Timely- You should identify the time-frame in which you expect to achieve this goal. Without a specific time-frame, you will not feel any urgency toward achieving the goal.

STEP2:
Now that you’ve gotten clear about the goals you want to achieve, break them down into smaller chunks. Ask yourself “What will this goal require of me?” If you want to meditate for 30-minutes, 5 days per week, will you have to get up 30-minutes earlier in the morning? Will you have to cut out another daily activity? Do you need to research meditation practices?

Work backwards to identify all of the things you will need to do in order to achieve your goal.

STEP 3:

Finally- schedule time in your calendar to commit to your goal and treat it with importance just like anything else on your calendar. Set daily intentions that will help you accomplish your goals. When will you set aside time to research meditation methods? When will you attend that beginner meditation class in your local community? What time in the morning will you get up to meditate and where will you go to do it?

The more thorough you can be when it comes to identifying your goals and what action you must take to achieve them, the easier it will be for you to stay committed.

If you find that you fall off-track- don’t worry! Don’t throw in the towel. Simply acknowledge why you fell off track and come up with a solution to prevent it from happening again. Jump right back in where you left off and keep progressing forward.
