Congressman Tim Ryan is leading the way towards mindfulness in the white house. The 41 year old represents Northeast Ohio and is currently serving his seventh term.
After visiting a meditation retreat, Ryan rejoined the public with a whole new perception of the mind-body connection. His intention was to unwind, but he had a higher experience that led him to acknowledge how our thoughts can influence our actions.
The congressman describes his experience saying, “I came out of it with a whole new way of relating with what was going on in the world, and like any good thing that a congressman finds—a new technology, a new policy idea—immediately I said, ‘How do we get this out?” He says, “I decided, I would advocate in congress and on the appropriations Committee for integrating mindfulness into key aspects of our society.” He has even published a book on this knowledge titled - A Mindful Nation: How a Simple Practice Can Help Us Reduce Stress, Improve Performance, and Recapture the American Spirit, which Bill Clinton says “explains how the simple act of self-reflection can help us build a better America.”
Ryan also stated that “The more I researched it, the more I realized: if this is presented as something that’s universal, everyone can benefit. Football players, marines, my constituents—this is for everybody.”
